A senior US official made a statement that the US has so far repatriated approximately 1600 Americans from India, but a number of people amongst them have been developing cold feet in flying back to their homes.
Alice G Wells, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, said in a teleconference which was conducted on Monday that 1300 citizens have been brought back to the US and also there are five flights which have been scheduled this week for repatriating Americans. She also said that it is cumbersome to find out how many citizens do need assistance in repatriating to their home country since they have got more than 7000 people registered with the US embassy and also Consulate.
But Wells did not mention why the Americans are developing cold feet in returning back to their homes. There is much probability that this is happening since the US is emerging as the new epicenter of Covid-19 in the world.
Over 3,60,000 people were tested positive for the virus and also 10,000 fatalities were recorded in the US within a matter of week till Monday.
Wells also told that Americans in India need to make a decision.
Several Americans canceled their plans to return to the US even after the government made arrangements for their flights, said Ian Brownlee, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.
The US brought back over 43,000 Americans back to their home country since January 29th from countries like India, Egypt, Peru, Burundi, and Nepal.
Browlee said that the US is presently working on over 80 flights worldwide.
